If you take a trip to natural food stores or listen to daytime television commercials, it will not take long until you are exposed to a barrage of ads and information on herbal supplements. Herbal supplements have been popular for the last several years. Data dating back to 1993 show that herbal supplements represented the top pharmacy growth category. Today, more than 500 herbs are marketed in the United States. The top five selling herbs (1996 data) in the United States include echinacea, garlic, ginseng, ginko biloba, and goldenseal. Other popular herbal preparations or compounds are St. John's wort, glucosamine, and condritin sulfate.
